Between 2014 and 2022 Red Star Surf received Tripadvisor’s Certificate of Excellence every year and then its Travellers’ Choice award, and today our guests rate us 4.8 out of 5 on Google. We are proud of that — but the part that matters most is not the badge. It is what the reviews made us change.
We read every review
Every review on Tripadvisor and Google is read by the team, the good ones and the critical ones. Praise tells us what to protect; criticism tells us where to work. Over the years, a lot of small changes in the school and the surf houses started with one sentence written by a guest.
What changed in the surf lessons
The biggest changes came from feedback on the lessons themselves. Video analysis, which used to happen once a week, became a daily part of the longer lessons, because guests told us the weekly session came too late to fix anything. We shortened the breaks in the four-hour lessons so students stay in the flow and spend more time in the water. And we keep groups small — normally up to five students per instructor — because that is what reviewers mention most when a lesson went really well.
What changed in the surf houses
In our accommodation in Caleta de Famara, reviews led to many small things that add up: places to store boards, clearer information on arrival, and a steady stream of fixes you would only notice if they were missing. None of it is spectacular. All of it came from someone taking two minutes to tell us.
