Surf school in Lanzarote

Red Star Surf has been teaching surfing in Caleta de Famara, Lanzarote, since 2010. We are the reference school in the area for several reasons: instructors certified by the ISA (International Surfing Association) and the RLSS (Royal Life Saving Society), small groups – usually up to 5 students per instructor and never more than 8, the maximum recommended by the ISA –, daily video analysis on the 4-hour courses and a 4.8/5 rating on Google and 4.9/5 on Tripadvisor. Our school is open 365 days a year, because Famara has waves all year round. Most important of all: at Red Star Surf the vibe is always great!

Yes, completely. Safety is our top priority. Every beginner lesson includes a dynamic warm-up, safety instructions before going in the water and constant supervision by certified instructors. Lessons take place in wave conditions suited to the students' level, and our instructors are RLSS (Royal Life Saving Society) qualified, which means they are trained lifeguards. The only requirement for beginner lessons is being able to swim 50 metres unaided.

Our Surf Camp includes: surf lessons 5 days a week (2 hours in the Easy pack or 4 hours in the Performance pack), a private room in one of our Surf Houses, surfboard and wetsuit, video analysis on every lesson day in the Performance pack, medical insurance during the lessons, a T-shirt and certificate from 5 days of lessons, and all the atmosphere and community of the camp. Packages start from €229 for 3 nights (Easy) and from €265 (Performance). The accommodation includes a fully equipped kitchen, free Wi-Fi, board storage, sheets and towels.

Our surf school and shop is at Avenida el Marinero 9, 35558 Caleta de Famara, Lanzarote, Canary Islands. It is on the village's main road, opposite the Chiringuito bar and the Otilia supermarket. The shop is open 9:00–20:00 (9:00–19:00 in winter). We are about 25–35 minutes by car from Arrecife airport: you can come by taxi (€35–40), public bus or hire car. We always work with small groups: usually up to 5 students per instructor, and never more than 8, the maximum recommended by the ISA. This applies to single lessons and to the Surf Camp alike. Advanced groups tend to be smaller, because surfers who already paddle out to the line-up need more individual attention in the water. This small-group policy is essential for every student's safety and progress.

Yes. We offer surf lessons for children from 6 years old, from beginner to advanced level, always in a safe and fun environment. Lessons take place in waist-deep water, with our instructors always close by. Our experience shows that mixed groups of children and adults work best and are the most fun: children learn to relax and use their natural skills, while adults catch their energy. The maximum is still 8 students per instructor. For anyone under 18, authorisation from a parent or guardian is required, signed online at check-in. Most children are standing on the board within the first few hours.

Our team is international and speaks several languages. The main working languages are Spanish and English, which all instructors speak fluently. Within the team there are people who speak German, French, Italian and Russian, but these extra languages are not guaranteed at all times: they are available on request and depend on the team each season. If you have specific language needs, ask us before booking and we will do our best to accommodate you.

You don't need to bring anything. The school provides all the equipment: a surfboard suited to your level, wetsuit, rash vest and medical insurance during the lessons. If you already have your own gear and want to use it, you can. You can also rent equipment at our shop for free sessions: we have more than 120 different boards (soft-tops, minimals, longboards, shortboards, SUPs) and wetsuits from brands like Quiksilver, Roxy and Xcel in every size.

You can come straight to our shop to ask about availability, especially for equipment rental or single lessons. However, to guarantee a place in the lessons and in the Surf Camp accommodation, we recommend booking in advance, especially in high season. Famara is a small, authentic village with a surprisingly good food scene. A few minutes' walk from us you will find several fresh-fish restaurants, tapas bars, pizzerias, a grill house and breakfast spots. There are restaurants with very fresh produce, quality seafood and authentic local Canarian cooking. There are places recognised by the Michelin Guide in the area – in particular Las Dunas, in the Famara Bungalows development, right by the beach. As for going out, Famara is a quiet village focused on surfing and kiting, with no real nightlife except during the last week of August. For clubs, concerts and late bars, Teguise, Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen and Jameos del Agua are 10–30 minutes away by car.

Yes. At our surf shop in Famara you can rent surfboards, wetsuits, rash vests, bodyboards, SUPs, skimboards, skateboards and surfskates without signing up for lessons. Rental is by the full day, from one day up to a month, and it works out cheaper by the week. With surfboards we offer unlimited swaps if conditions change or you want to try something different. Yes, Red Star Surf is open 365 days a year. Famara beach has waves all year thanks to Lanzarote's privileged location. In winter there is usually more swell, which is great for intermediate and advanced surfers – although beginners learn perfectly well at that time of year too. In summer the waves are usually smaller, but we run lessons for every level all year round. Air temperature ranges between 17°C and 26°C depending on the season, and the water between 17°C and 25°C. In short, it's always a good time to learn to surf in Lanzarote.

Yes. We have a 2-hour private 1:1 lesson (from €150), for any level, in the morning or afternoon, and a private lesson for groups of 2 to 8 people (from €180 per group) – ideal for families, friends or teams. Your instructor adapts the exercises to your goals and gives you continuous feedback on the beach and in the water. Yes. There are gift cards of €70 (a full-day surf course), €100 (for any activity), €350 (a 5-day surf course) and €500 (towards a Surf Camp or Kite Camp). They are valid for 3 years and can be used for surf and kite lessons and camps, yoga, massage, rental and accommodation – the full price or part of it.
