Discover Our Children’s Surf Lessons

Children who join our surf lessons in Famara, Lanzarote have the time of their lives! We teach kids from total beginners to advanced level — always in a safe, fun environment, with patient instructors who genuinely love teaching children.

What Will They Learn?

The first session is mostly about being comfortable: carrying the board, lying on it, falling off it on purpose. Once that is boring, they learn to catch broken waves lying down, then to push up to their knees, then to stand.

From there it is steering, choosing which wave to take and paddling back out without help. Kids usually get to their feet faster than adults – lighter, lower centre of gravity, and no fear of looking silly.

Lessons are in waist–deep white water on soft–top boards with flexible fins. Instructors are ISA certified and qualified lifeguards, groups stay small, and the minimum age is six with a 50–metre swim.

Why Mixed Groups Work

Our experience has taught us that children-only groups are not very effective — so we mix children and adults. The most productive and fun groups are the ones where kids and adults learn together and feed off each other’s enthusiasm and energy.
Often the kids show the adults how to have fun, use natural abilities and stay relaxed, while the adults help the kids with the important educational side.
We keep our groups small, always working to a maximum of eight students per instructor, in keeping with the recommendation of the ISA.

The sun in Lanzarote is strong — apply high-factor water-resistant sunscreen to your child’s exposed skin before the lesson. If you forget, sunscreen is available in our surf shop.

Get Them Off to a Great Start

Trying to surf on their own, kids repeat the same basic errors again and again. Progress stalls, frustration grows — and bad habits develop that are hard to unlearn.
Our patient, professional instructors constantly give young surfers helpful pointers and guide them along their surfing journey.
The sea can be a dangerous place, but all our instructors are certified lifeguards (RLSS) with the safety skills and knowledge to make every ocean session fun.

Our Surf Instructors

The raw, real enthusiasm children have is inspiring and motivating — our surf instructors love teaching kids!
Our highly skilled, kid-friendly professional team are also lifeguards, certified by the Canarian Surfing Federation, the International Surfing Association and the Royal Life Saving Society. Meet our team.

Equipment We Use

Surfboards: we use child-sized soft surfboards with soft fins to prevent injury, plus extra-long leashes so the board doesn’t drag your child when they fall off — and they have extra time to protect their body.
Wetsuits: your child’s body will be protected (from the sea, the board and the sun!) with high-quality wetsuits from top brands including Xcel, Quiksilver and Roxy.

Surfing as a family? Kids and parents learn together in the same small group — book everyone onto the same course. Or take a private group lesson from €180 for your family only, with your own dedicated instructor. Check availability.

What Will Your Child Learn?

Alongside standing up and riding waves, our lessons build real ocean knowledge. Depending on their level, kids learn:

  • Positioning on the board, paddling technique and the pop-up
  • How waves work and how to read the ocean
  • How to stay safe and avoid dangerous situations
  • Surfing etiquette and the rules of the line-up
  • Respect for the ocean and the environment
  • Balance, confidence and water skills that last a lifetime

We had a 2-hour lesson with the Red Star Surf guys on Friday and it was fantastic! We were surfing for the first time and the guys did a great job of getting us up on the boards and going on our first day. They were also very safety conscious. Would definitely go to them again.

Quick FAQ

Short answers to the questions parents ask most.

Can complete beginners join?

Yes — we teach children from total beginners to advanced level. Lessons take place in waist-deep water with an instructor always close by.

How safe are the lessons?

Safety is our absolute priority. Lessons are held in waist-deep water, groups are small (usually up to 5, max. 8 per instructor), and every instructor is a certified lifeguard (RLSS) as well as a qualified surf coach.

Why do children and adults share a group?

Experience has shown us that children-only groups are not very effective. Mixed groups are more productive and more fun: kids bring energy and fearlessness, adults bring focus — and everyone feeds off each other’s enthusiasm.

What should my child bring?

Swimwear, flip-flops, sunscreen, water and a towel. Please make sure your child arrives in swimwear with sun cream already applied. Board, wetsuit and leash are all provided.

What’s the difference between the 2-hour and 4-hour lessons?

The 2-hour lesson (from €50) runs from 10 am to 12:30 pm and finishes on the beach. The 4-hour course (from €70) adds daily video analysis with final feedback and free hotel pick-up.

Is hotel transfer available?

Yes — free hotel pick-up can be arranged if you’re not staying in Famara, for the 4-hour courses only. Contact us to arrange the details.

My child needs medication — what should we do?

Your child is insured during the lesson. If they need to carry any medication, bring it to the beach and let their surf instructor know what to do in an emergency.

What if the schedule changes?

Lesson times can shift with the tides. After booking you’ll receive detailed information, and we recommend joining our WhatsApp lesson group — at most one message a day to confirm the next day’s start time. No messages means everything runs as confirmed.

Does a parent need to help during the lesson?

For children aged 6 to 11, yes: one parent or another adult joins the lesson in the water as a helper. You don’t take the lesson: we lend you a wetsuit for free, you go into the water with the instructor and do what he asks – for example, catch your child after each wave. This matters even more on days with stronger waves. If nobody can join, book a private lesson: your child surfs one-to-one with the instructor. From 12, kids join the group on their own. Every participant under 18 needs a signed parental authorisation.
